AI Disclosure Statements
In situations where AI is permitted, students can promote trust between themselves and their instructors by being transparent and honest when they do use AI. For example, it is becoming more standard these days for students and professionals alike to add disclosure statements in their documents to indicate which AI tools were used and how. Take this example of a disclosure statement that could be placed at the end of a research paper:
Note: This research paper was structured based on ideas from an outline created by ChatGPT 4o, and the grammar and usage were edited using Grammarly. Approximately half of the sources were located using Consensus AI.
If an instructor allows AI use, a disclosure statement like this creates transparency about the use of AI, and can promote trust between the student and the instructor. On the other hand, hiding AI usage from an instructor only creates distrust.
