Help for Searching in MEDLINE

MEDLINE is a database that uses CINAHL and MeSh subject headings to organize the materials within it. CINAHL stands for "Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature," and it is a controlled vocabulary thesaurus used by EBSCO. MeSH stands for "Medical Subject Headings," and it is the controlled vocabulary thesaurus of the NIH National Library of Medicine.

If you understand how these subject headings work, you can create extremely efficient searches to find what you need.

Check out the links below for videos and tips on navigating and composing searches using CINAHL and MeSH subject headings and other tools within the MEDLINE system.

Getting Materials: When you find an article in MEDLINE, click Full Text Finder. If there is no full text finder link, copy and paste the article title into CU Search. If the article is not appearing, expand the search to "Other Libraries" or "Libraries Worldwide," click the item, and select "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan." Then library staff will check if a copy is available to email to you.
