- General Search Tips: In any database, use the search filters on the left, put quotation marks around multi-word phrases, and capitalize the Boolean operators AND and OR. Examples:
“grammar instruction” AND “secondary education”
“genre-based” AND grammar
“task-based” AND grammar
“verb tense” AND (“second language acquisition” OR ESL)
grammar AND connectionism AND nativism
- Peer-Reviewed Articles: In CU Search, first put in your search terms and click search. On the left of your search results, click “Show Only” to reveal the checkbox to view only peer-reviewed sources, and check the box.
- InterLibrary Loan system: You can double the number of articles by clicking "At My Library" and then clicking the checkbox for "Other Libraries." For an item at another library, click the title, and then click the red button for "Request Item through InterLibrary Loan."

- Peer-Reviewed Academic Books: Start at the library homepage again. Put your search terms into CU Search and click search. On the left, click the checkbox for “Book.” Then when you find a book, click on the title, and look at the publisher. Look for university presses or other well-known academic publishers. Then look up the author. Use your judgment to determine if a source is academic enough.

- Additional Databases for Peer-Reviewed Articles: CU Search often misses a lot of articles, so make sure to check our other databases.
